It is often used as a substitute for golden seal because it contains the same chemical, berberine that is responsible for most of the medicinal properties It has been used for fabric dye and in medicine. In magic it can be used to purge evil from the self or to banish or create a barrier from negativity.

Precautions
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use barberry and it'should not be given to infants. Barberry could possible interact with a large number of medications.
